The best of Sumba tour which takes you to explore the island from the West all the way to the East! Along the way, you will discover magnificent nature and wonderful culture Sumba island is gifted with. Among these places, you will visit the traditional village of Ratenggaro with its towering roofs that can reach 15-meter high. You can also find megalithic tombs dating back thousands of years scattered around the village. Ever wonder how it feels like to stand on a tall cliff facing an open sea and scream at the top of your lungs? Well we don’t encourage it but you can do that from Tanjung Mareha. Also, from there you can see 2 beautiful beaches stretching on both sides of your arms. Don’t get too close to the edge for your own safety!

Tour Plan

Day 1: Watumalandong Beach - Tanjung Mareha - Bawanna Beach Sunset

Welcome to Tambolaka! The starting point of our Best of Sumba tour.

Upon arrival at the airport, meet and greet with your guide and we will begin the journey. But before start, we will firstly have a lunch in one of local restaurant. Then, we will go to Watumalandong Beach where you can take a beautiful pictures of giant rocks sitting on the sea side. After this, we’re going down to the beach of Bwanna. It is a long clear colorful sand beach under the majestic cliff heading to the Indian Ocean makes this place extraordinary. Whilst the beauty is unquestionable, the beach is still unknown by most tourist, which make it almost private and very clean. Enjoy the day at a quiet beach till the sunset and transfer back to the hotel.

Please get your bag ready with towel and extra clothes as we might head to the beach directly from the airport.

Day 2: Market & School Visit - Ratenggaro Village & Beach - Wainyapu Village

After early breakfast, we will go to South West Sumba to visit a traditional market. After that, at 9.30am we will go to visit one of senior high school in South West Sumba. Arriving at the school, the students will be welcoming you with their traditional dance. You can have a close interactions with them, and enjoying the coffee and snack provided by them. This experience could be one of your highlights in this Best of Sumba Tour!

Then, we go to Ratenggaro village in Kodi area. Here we will see the traditional high rooftops houses (actually the highest rooftops in whole Sumba) made all by hand and traditionally. This village is the only one of a few traditional villages left in the area. While the village is just a compound of some houses, each house can accommodate up to 50 family members. On the harvesting season, however, most of the villagers will stay in their field to work and only leave the elders and child in the village.

Then we go to the next one, Wainyapu Village. Here you will visit the Pasola field, the festival that Sumba has which held every year in February/March. Lastly, we will go to Toda Village for an overnight stay. Arriving at the village, you will have tea and coffee with the local, and then cooking for the dinner together. After that, enjoy have dinner and take a rest.

Day 3: Daily Activities in Toda Village - Weekuri Lake - Mandorak Beach Sunset

Enjoy your breakfast before we begin today’s activities. While in Toda Village, you will experience the daily activities of Sumbanese people, such as go garden to cut the grass and give it to the pets (horses, cows, and pigs). You also can enjoy horse riding together with them. They will show you how the Sumba boxing is.

After lunch, we will leave the village and continue our trip to Weekuri Lake. It is a crystal clear lake that makes it a great place to swim and to relax. Spend some time in the lake for taking a short (or long) dip. Do not miss to walk around the rocks and reef where you can also see the Oceans from one side. Next to the Weekuri Lake, we will find Mandorak Beach that is guarded with 2 huge rock ridges pointing to the middle and crystal clear water. Here, you might meet some kids who are eager to talk with you. Have some nice conversation with them while you enjoy the refreshing coconut water. We will stay here until sunset, then go back to your hotel.

Day 4: Waikelo Ricefield - Praijing Village - Lapopu Waterfall - Waigali & Praigoli Village

You are halfway in this Best of Sumba Tour! Today, we will explore the West area of Sumba.

Weaving Ikat…

After breakfast, we will heading to Waikelo where you will do a short trekking in the ricefield and see the water cave. The chances to meet the locals here are big. Sometimes, you can see them bathing in the river or just doing their laundry. After that, we go to Praijing that is another nice traditional village in Sumba. The locals here are friendly, especially the funny kids. They learn a lot about English, so you can try to communicate with them. Entering the village, sometimes you will see them preparing their food or weaving the Ikat (Sumbanese fabric). If they are okay with it, you can ask them to teach you how to make one. From the top where the view point has been made, you can see the panorama of the whole village.

The endless hills…

Moving on, we will stop local restaurant for lunch. Then, our trip continues to Lapopu Waterfall. After a drive through the endless hills and green landscapes of Sumba, you will arrive nearby the waterfall. To visit the waterfall, you will need to do a small hike of approximately 15 minutes and cross a bamboo bridge to get there. There is a nice spot to sit down where you can watch the water find its way down the hill. After that, we will visit Praigoli Village to see the Kajiwa Stone and Pasola Field. Pasola is the annual festival of war in Sumba. Not far from Praigoli village, we will visit Waigali village located on top of a hill where we can see a spectacular view. Here we can see the Andung (Scull Tree). After that, we go straight to your accommodation to rest.

Day 5: Market Visit - Galubakul Village - Wairinding Hill

After breakfast, we will visit the traditional market of West Sumba. Then, our trip continues to Galubakul village, a village where you can see the biggest megalithic tombs in Sumba. After lunch, we drive to East Sumba for about 3-4 hours, and stop for a sunset view in Wairinding Hill. The views could be one of your highlights in this Best of Sumba Tour! Here, you may see some kids offering their Ikat and horses to be ride.

Day 6: Sunrise At Tenau Hill - Puru Kambera Savanna - Tanggedu Waterfall

Wake up early in the morning to go for sunrise trekking up to the hills of Tenau. Enjoy the sunrise of the amazing hills, and then going back to hotel for breakfast and some rest. Around 12 noon, we depart for lunch and then continue to Tanggedu Waterfall. On the way you, will make a stop in Puru Kambera, a savannah where you can see some horses, cows, and buffalo feeding on the grass. Next, our trip continues to Tanggedu Waterfall, a hidden and stunning waterfall in East Sumba. The waterfall is beautiful, but to get it you have to do trekking for about 1 hour one way. But, you will pass savanna and hills around you which will make the trekking not so boring. Arriving at the waterfall, enjoy your free time for swimming. After that, we go back to hotel and rest.

Day 7: End Of Trip
