Welcome to Waingapu! The starting point of our East to West Sumba tour.

Upon arrival at the airport, meet and greet with our guide and we will begin the journey. We will drive directly to Waimarang Waterfall. The tough trekking you will have to do to get down will be adventurous. Don’t forget to bring your swimming clothes here, because you’ll be tempted to jump into the water after the trek. The next and last stop today will be at Walakiri beach. We will be watching the sunset here while exploring the beach with its beautiful mangroves. Don’t hesitate and walk towards the small and magical trees which are growing inside the water.

Day 2: Kallu Village - Wairinding Hills - Praijing Village - Lapopu Waterfall

After breakfast and check out from hotel, we will drive to the South West Sumba. On the way you will make some visits to know more about the island.

Endless hills…

First stop will be at Kallu village, where we can see the villagers are making their traditional fabric named Ikat. You will see a lot of Ikat pattern here, which has its own meaning. Second stop will be the Hills of Wairinding. There is a nice spot where the view into these hills is amazing. You will be looking at green and endless hills. Sit down for a while in the grass and enjoy the moment.

Bamboo bridge and waterfall…

After that we drive to West Sumba, to visit Praijing Village and Lapopu Waterfall. Praijing village is a traditional village uphill surrounded by lots of greenery. This is one of the few villages where we can actually have a beautiful overview of the entire village and it draws an idea of how the village is built upon. Take some time to walk around the village; the elders occupy most of the houses and kids are always around to share their smiles. They are also happy to talk with visitors and try to communication in English, as they learn it there.

Next on our adventure will be the Lapopu Waterfall. After a drive through the endless hilly and green landscapes of Sumba, you will arrive nearby the waterfall. To visit the waterfall, you will need to do a small hike of approximately 15 minutes and cross a bamboo bridge to get there. There is a nice spot to sit down where you can watch the water find its way down the hill.

This is our last visit today, and we will drive to your hotel in South West Sumba.

Day 3: Have Fun With The Locals

You are halfway in this East to West Sumba tour!

After breakfast, we will visit a market and school in South West Sumba. Arriving at the school, the students will welcome you with Sumbanese traditional dance. After that you can have direct interaction with them. Next we go to Toda Village to experience the daily activities of the Sumba’s local people. Join them to the garden to cut wild grass and feed the livestocks (horses, cows, and pigs) or enjoy horse riding together. They can also show you how the Sumba boxing looks like. When the time is perfect for sunset, the villagers will take us to Toda beach to watch the sunset together. After that back to hotel and rest.

Day 4: Lake Weekuri - Mandorak Beach - Ratenggaro Village - Bwanna Beach

Our trip continues after breakfast.

The salt water lake…

The first stop will be Lake Weekuri. It is a crystal-clear salt water lake that makes it a great place to swim and to relax. Spend some time in the lake for taking a short (or long) dip. Do not miss to walk around the rocks and reef where you can also see the oceans. Next to the Weekuri Lake, we will find Mandorak Beach. It is guarded with 2 huge rock ridges pointing to the middle and crystal clear water.

The highest rooftop…

Our trip continuing to Ratenggaro village in Kodi area. Here we will see the traditional high rooftops houses (actually the highest rooftops in whole Sumba) made all by hand and traditionally. This village is the only one of a few traditional villages left in the area, and while the village is just a compound of some houses, each house can accommodate up to 50 family members. During harvesting season, however, most of the villagers will stay in their field to work and only leave the elders and child in the village. There is also a beach near this village that you can explore.

Sunset time…

Next we go to Bwanna Beach. You will need to do a bit of trekking downhill then you can enjoy the amazing cliff-side beach. There is a huge rock arc, like a giant door. We will stay here until sunset.
