Tour Plan

Day 1: Waingapu East Sumba Arrival

Umbu Mehang Kunda Airport – Prailiu Village (5Km): 15 minutes Prailiu Village - Hotel area (11Km): 25 minutes Hotel – Tenau Hill (42Km): 1 hour
Arrive at Umbu Mehang Kunda Airport, Waingapu.

Welcome to the island of Sumba, formerly known as the Sandalwood Island, known for its idyllic tribal culture, unique megalithic tombs and distinct landscapes.

Be met with the guide and driver at the airport and then take a transfer to the local restaurant for lunch.
On the way to the hotel, have a stop to Prailiu Traditional Village in East Sumba, home to Prailiu weaver’s collective which empowers the weavers of Prailiu to create handcrafted Sumba Warp Ikat cloth.
Take an opportunity to learn about how the weaver uses the methods handed down from their ancestors and natural organic dyes.

Following the visit Prailiu traditional village, continue to the hotel for check in.

After having refreshed and if time allows, be transferred to Tenau Hill to enjoy sunset in Sumba at the perfect viewpoint.

Return to the hotel, and have dinner at leisure.

Day 2: Rende Village - Waimarang - Walakiri

Hotel area – Rende Village (76Km): 1hour 45 minutes Rende Village – Waimarang waterfall (20Km): 30 minutes Waimarang waterfall – Walakiri beach (56Km): 1hour Walakiri beach – hotel in Waingapu (28Km): 45 minutes.

After breakfast, be picked up with the guide and head out to Rende, a village of kings’ and their slaves’ story, with massive megalithic stone graves inside.
Continue the trip to Waimarang Waterfall, a stunning place that is just a 30-minute walk from the parking lot to discover a secluded pond and waterfall for a refreshing dip.

Note: It is possible to have a bath in the basin of the waterfall, please note that there are no changing room facilities.

Enjoy a lunch box at around the waterfall.
Driving ahead to the Walakiri beach with views of the savannah along the way to the destination. Explore the beach, and the mangrove over there which contributes to save the marine biodiversity.
Return to the hotel in Waingapu late in the afternoon.

Day 3: Wairinding Hills - Praijing Village - Lamboya

Waingapu – Wairinding hills (42Km): 1hur 15 minutes Wairinding hill – Praijing village (130Km): 3 hours Praijing village - Hotel in Lamboya (28Km): 1hour

This morning after breakfast, check-out the hotel and proceed to drive to the west part of Sumba Island.

On the way, make a stop at the breathtaking views of Wairinding hill lines. The rare sight to see the savannah in Sumba, where the colour will be very green during the rainy season and it will be dry-grey on dry season.

Enjoy a pre-packed lunch box around the area.

Continue driving along the captivating views to the Praijing megalithic village, located in the hills, it consists of houses built in traditional Sumbanese style, and surrounding stone megalithic tombs and other tribal stone structures. Praijing village is picturesque seen from up hills.

Following the Praijing village visit, continue drive to Lamboya. Check-in to the hotel upon arrival at the hotel in the late afternoon.
Spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 4: Waigali Village - Praigoli Village - Lapopu Waterfall

Hotel area – Waigali village (25Km): 1hour Waigali Village – Praigoli Village (1Km): 10 minutes Praigoli village – Lapopu Waterfall (36Km): 1 hour

Breakfast at the hotel and get ready for today’s tour exploring West Sumba.

Discover the Waigali and Praigolil Traditional Villages which exhibit monumental megalith headstones which have become a symbol of Sumba. Visit Waigali Village to see the famous Andung or skull tree dedicated to the war Merapu and how it was used as the altar where headhunters once hung their trophies.

Next visit is Praigolil village where stands the Watu Kajiwa stone, the oldest stone grave with fine detailed carvings adorn the unusually shaped gravestone. Praigolil Village is where the annual Pasola ceremony is took place.

A pre-packed lunch box will be served here.

Proceed driving through the hilly road and the green landscape of Sumba for one of prettiest waterfalls in Sumba. After a short walk under the shady trees, cross a bamboo bridge over a raging river and be rewarded with a splendid cascade of water.

Note: It is possible to have a bath in the basin of the waterfall but please note that there is no changing room facilities.

Return to the hotel and spend the remaining day at leisure.

Today is free to spend at leisure either exploring independently or relaxing at the hotel.

Day 6: Bawanna Beach / Tanjung Mareha - Ratenggaro Village

Hotel in Lamboya – Bawanna beach/ Tanjung Mareha (43Km): 1hour 30 minutes Bawanna beach/ Tanjung Mareha - Ratenggaro Village (18Km) 35 minutes Ratenggaro village – hotel in Tambolaka (55Km) 1hour 30 minutes.

Be met after breakfast with the guide and driver to proceed towards the south west of Sumba.
First stop is Bawanna Beach with its iconic batu bolong, a rock wall with a giant hole that sits on an unspoilt stretch of sand facing the Indian Ocean.

The next stop is Tanjung Mareha. It is a small hill that extends into the sea. Take a short walk along the gentle ridge to the end of the cape and enjoy the picturesque views!
Enjoy a pre-packed  lunch box around the area.

Continue on to visit Ratenggaro Village, a residential cluster of traditional homes inhabited by locals. The village also makes traditional hand woven product that has become a signature of the island’ culture.

Be welcomed by megalithic tombs that line the path to the village.  The traditional houses with the high thatch-roofed stilted houses, exaggeratedly high roofs were made to reach the gods. The central part of the house is for humans and the area below is for the family’s livestock.
Head out to the hotel and check-in upon arrival in the afternoon.

Day 7: Waikuri Lake - Mandorak Beach

Hotel area – Waikuri Lake (50Km): 1hour 30 minutes Waikuri Lake – Mandorak beach: a walking distance

Today’s activities are a lake and beach visit.
After breakfast, be picked up with the guide and head out to Waikuri Lake, a stunning salt water lagoon located in south-west Sumba.

Enjoy the crystal blue turquoise waters or get a chance to take a dive into Waikuri Lake.
Enjoy a pre-packed lunch box around the area of Waikuri Lake.

Proceed to Mandorak Beach next door. The beach looks like a lake trapped between rocks. Take a short walk to the cliff and enjoy the beautiful view from there. Relish watching the clear waters where fishermen fish at the small beach with big waves.
Return to the hotel in Tambolaka late in the afternoon.

Day 8: End Of Trip
